Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father was a carnival barker, died when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to help support the family by working as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. She left school after two years in order to study acting. This was not an easy path to follow. Although she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine but no theater jobs came her way. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home to the United States and quit the job she was working in. She made ends meet as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
